iphone_homeMarket researcher, InStat, says smartphone users including iPhone users worldwide generally download up to five software applications each.

The minimal amount of downloads seem to be at competition with the heavy use of the iPhone App Store. The store was such a big hit that Apple put out advertisements in early December. Downloads hit 300 million shortly after it opened on July 11, 2008. Projections expected it would turn into a US $1 billion business.

It may still be possible, although the store hasn’t changed the fact that smartphone users, as well as iPhone users, download five apps each on average. This is a trend InStat says can be seen across many different mobile OSs.

According to researcher Net Applications, iPhone users are the largest Web users, especially in the U.S. The company measured mobile Internet browsing and Web search from handsets and found that 66 percent of the people were iPhone users.

The next five rivals are as follows:

  • Java ME – 9.11 percent share
  • Windows Mobile – 6.9 percent share
  • Google’s Android software – 6.26 percent share
  • Symbian – 6.17 percent share
  • Palm – 2.37 percent share

This all implies that more people are turning to cell phones to get information right away.
