Make sure you check out the latest post by my former University of Connecticut journalism student Christine Gratton. Christine is doing wonderful work as a social media expert with the Technology Group. Christine offers a current snapshot of where the newspaper industry is these days and where it could be headed.
Over the years there’s been no harsher critic of the newspaper industry than I. I’ve made the point a number of times on this site that most newspapers were way too slow in responding to the changing media landscape.
But the times are a changin’ I think most in the print world now get it! Yes, some throwbacks still long for the “good old days” when print was king, but a rapidly growing number of newspapers and newspaper people are “making the switch.” They’re struggling with how, but at least they acknowledge they have to do something.
I’VE SEEN THE FUTURE
Currently I’m involved for one of the most interesting cross media platform efforts going on anywhere in the country. While I’m no longer employed full time with WTIC-TV (FoxCT) I continue in a part-time role as an Internet and Technology reporter. Recently the TV news operation moved into the same facility as our corporate cousin The Hartford Courant.
I’d be lying if I said the transition was met with open arms by everyone in the old newspaper newsroom but I sense a little thaw in the ice.
